Annual Charity Golf Tournament was a resounding success.
We wish to thank both our participants and sponsors for making the 14th Annual Stephen W. Rowen Memorial Golf Tournament the most successful ever. This charity event was held at the Weston Golf Club on Monday, May 22, 2006, and benefits seminarians currently enrolled at Blessed John XXIII National Seminary, a Weston institution since 1964.
The seminary community is especially grateful to the members and staff of the Weston Golf Club for allowing this event to be held at this private course. A full roster of over 100 golfers participated in the day’s events; which included lunch at the Weston Golf Club, 18 holes of golf, a social hour, silent auction and dinner with tournament prizes.
This local charity event is held to benefit the educational program for the over sixty Seminarians currently enrolled at the Seminary. This unique national seminary prepares mature men who have already contributed to their community through a secular career and will embark on a new vocation as ordained Roman Catholic Priests. Tuition covers only half the cost of educating a seminarian and the proceeds from this tournament help bridge the gap and keep the cost of their education affordable.
This year’s event was the most successful tournament to-date, with over 80 local and national businesses participating as sponsors. These included Framingham Ford, which offered a car as a Grand Prize for the tournament “Hole-In-One” Contest. Other sponsors included the Boston Red Sox and Harpoon Brewery – both of Boston; Golf Pro Dave Renzulli of the Weston Golf Club, Regis College Fine Arts Center and PGA Professional Mike Wortis of the Leo J. Martin Memorial Golf Club – all of Weston, Daryl Christopher Salon and Day Spa, Grape Ideas, Tom Quirk, PGA Professional of the Wayland Country Club and Lavin’s Package Store and Wine Cellar all of Wayland; Sirius Satellite Radio of New York, Anderson’s Jeweler’s of Wellesley, The Village Bank of Newton and Wayland, Course Pro Jeff Phillips of the Wellesley Country Club, Golf Pro Brian Hamilton of the Eastward Ho! Country Club in Chatham, Course Pro Rich Hasenfus of the Needham Golf Club, Global Companies LLC of Waltham and Stanton Insurance Agency, also of Waltham.
Other local businesses that provided tournament prizes included Florentine Frames, Weston Optical Co., Inc. and Gordon’s Liquors; all of Weston; Donelan’s Supermarket, J.J. McKay’s Restaurant, Lavin’s Liquors, Mel’s Commonwealth Cafe, Post Road Liquors and The Villa Restaurant of Wayland; Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Peabody Essex Museum, John F. Kennedy Library, DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Acushnet Titleist Worldwide, Golf Pro Dan Malizia of the Charles River Country Club in Needham, Golf Pro Jimmy Noris of the Dedham Country Club and Polo Club, Brendan Walsh of The Country Club in Brookline, Fannon’s Liquors of Natick, Brookline Liquor Mart of Allston, Hallsmith-Sysco Food Services and Russo’s and Sons Produce of Watertown.
Lastly, we wish to express our sincere thanks to the member of the 2006 Golf Tournament Committee, who worked tirelessly to make the tournament the most successful ever. Committee members were Mr. Jack Weiss of Wayland, Mr. Jeffrey Konover of Weston, Mr. Jonathan Hughes of Weston, Mr. Richard Denning of Wellesley, Mr. Kurt Macnamara of Weston, Mr. Gerry Moran of Weston, Mr. Thomas Megan of Wellesley, Mr. Peter Noonan of Weston, Mr. Anthony Vallace of Weston, Mr. Thomas McGillicuddy of Wayland, Mrs. Patricia Hanna of Framingham, Mr. Thomas Folan of Belmont and Rev. Thomas Rafferty of Natick, ‘05.
This event marks the sixth year that the tournament has been named in memory of its founder, Stephen W. Rowen, formerly of Weston and Wayland. It is our honor to follow his example of exemplary leadership by continuing this important work. Seminarians who have benefited include Reverend Thomas Rafferty of St. Patrick Parish in Natick, a committee member and seminary alumni. “I am moved by the generosity of the benefactors who support the seminary. It is humbling to know that our vocations are supported by so many people. Without their generosity, I would not be where I am today,” says Father Rafferty.
