Alumni priest Rev. Anthony Cardone, Pope St John Class of 2011, was featured in the Divine Mercy News, June 17, 2014. "When I was a cop," he says, "I protected people and saved people, and now, through God's grace, I'm trying to save souls. I'm doing the same thing, only at the ultimate level. Battling evil — same thing as when I was a cop."
Pope John XXIII was canonized on Sunday, April 27th. A delegation from the seminary went on a pilgrimage to Italy to attend the ceremony. You can read about our pilgrimage on Facebook. We wwere interviewed by Paula Ebben (WBZ Boston), R.D. Sahl (NECN and Catholic TV ), Richard Weir (WHDH Boston) and Brian Williams, NBC Nightly News.
The Boston Pilot also featured an extensive article on the delegation from our seminary and information on our name change.
On April 15th the Catholic World Report wrote an article about 2nd-career seminarians, featuring a current student and graduate from Blessed John XX III National Seminary.
On March 27th seminarian Rick Lesser's article, "A Lenten parable: Making maple syrup at the seminary" appeared on Evangelist.org. Below are two pictures from their maple adventure at the seminary.
Catholic TV, a national cable network, featured Blessed John XXIII National Seminary in two shows - 'Catholic Destinations' and 'Clear Voice.' A short excerpt from their shows, featuring an overview of our unique Seminary, is available at the link at right:
On Tuesday, February 4th, Fr. Palardy appeared on The Good Catholic Life "to discuss the seminary, its 50th anniversary, the upcoming change in name when Bl. John XXIII is canonized, the elevation of former rector Bishop Peter Uglietto as vicar general for the archdiocese, and the epic softball battles between St. John Seminary and Bl. John Seminary."
On Monday, February 3rd, the Boston Herald wrote an article about our seminarian, Larry Love, and his delayed vocation. "Closing in on 69, some would call Larry a late bloomer. But in the Catholic Church it’s what is known as a delayed vocation, having felt a call on his life to become a padre, to walk away from a thriving career in ophthalmology and live out his faith as a diocesan priest down in his homeland of Tyler, Texas." On July 27, 2013, the National Catholic Register has written a lovely article featuring our seminary entitled "Seminary’s Older Vocations Boom: New Priests Reflect on Serving the Church After Leaving Worldly Professions". It featues interviews with Rector William Palardy and several of our seminarians. "The Class of 2013 is representative of the diversity of men who come to the seminary to answer God’s call. The class included men originally from Syria, Haiti, Cuba and Vietnam and from a variety of career backgrounds, including a pediatrician, pilot, accountant, Department of Natural Resources adviser, teacher, counselor and two monks." On May 13, 2013, the Catholic News Service released an article - 'The increasing number of men pursuing 'delayed vocations' to the priesthood,' by Joseph Austin. The article included a profile of a seminarian from the Class of 2013 - Michael Fragoso. The Catholic News Service serves 170 media outlets throughout the United States. On March 19, 2013, Rev. Thomas F. Schmitt, Dean of Seminarians at Blessed John XXIII was a guest commentator for the coverage of the Installation Mass for Pope Francis I which aired on NECN (New England Cable News).
“I think he’s going to put his own personal stamp on his papacy. Already we see that there’s spontaneity there and a special emphasis for the poor and disadvantaged. He’s going to make that a hallmark - reaching out to people, especially those hurting,” said Fr. Schmitt during his appearance. Fr. Cardinal Seán O'Malley, OFM Cap., was Principal Celebrant for the Rite of Candidacy on February 22, 2013 at our Seminary.
This special event was prominently featured in the Cardinal's weekly blog. Fourteen seminarians were received into Candidacy during this special Mass. The Seminary Schola performed three songs during the recent CatholicTV Annual Telethon on February 1-2, 2013.
The Schola consists of five seminarians and one faculty member. They are: Vocals - Gregory Bierbaum, ’15, (Diocese of Colorado Springs); Lawrence Love, ’14, (Diocese of Tyler); Russell Mower, ’15, (Diocese of Dallas); and Scott VanDerveer, ’13 (Diocese of Albany). The musicians were Brother Emmanuel Morinelli, OCSO, ’14, (Saint Joseph’s Abbey, Spencer, MA), who played the Harp and conducted the acapella songs; and John Clabeaux, Ph.D., a faculty member who played the Bass. Dr. Clabeaux teaches Sacred Scripture at Blessed John XXIII and has also hosted five series for CatholicTV.
